Mass Swim I
On July 22, 2008, more than 300 people took part in a mass swim at Richardson Beach in Kingston. The intent was to demonstrate to city council the need for safe, accessible public swimming spots in Lake Ontario in the downtown area. Richardson Beach was once a very popular swimming spot, with lifeguards, swimming rafts, change rooms and a canteen, but since the 1980s has been left to fall into disuse and disrepair.
Since the swim considerable structural work has been done to the stone beach house, as well as improved landscaping around the building. However, the change rooms inside the building are still in disrepair and it remains very difficult to get into the water because of the sharp stones.
