THE ARTWORK
'Dear Kingston...’ was a one day outdoor art exhibition curated by Su Sheedy on June 23, 2013, with 15 temporary word sculptures installed by artists along Kingston's 7.7km downtown shoreline, as part of the Shoreline Shuffle (see map below). Each word or phrase was relevant to the need of its immediate surroundings and drew reference to place, community desire, and the need for change along Kingston’s waterfront. Rising from the beach, floating on water, or woven in a chain link fence, words were made from flowers, seaweed, stones, and other natural materials intended to trigger a dialogue by asking the viewer to think creatively and to perceive surroundings in a new way. ‘Dear Kingston’ addressed our city much like an open letter, or a letter of intent, and aimed to bring together artists, politicians and all members of Kingston’s community to celebrate and generate discussion on current ideas of shoreline sustainability.
