MASS SWIM 3
Several hundred people were on hand for Mass Swim 3 at Breakwater Park in Kingston on July 28, 2018. This event was a little different than the past two Mass Swims insofar as it was a 'celeprotest'. We were celebrating the amazing new swimming facility at Breakwater Park - the first new urban swimming spot on Kingston's shoreline in more than 50 years - as well as the fact that it was our previous Mass Swims and other citizen-led initiatives that forced the City of Kingston to finally build this facility (part of our wonderful Waterfront Master Plan). It took 10 years, but we got there!
We also want to send the message to our policy makers that we don't want to wait another 30 years for the rest of the Waterfront Master Plan projects to unfold (as per official city policy). We need to re-prioritize our municipal spending to accelerate these plans, with all of their social, economic, health and cultural benefits. Any city can widen its roads, but not many have the opportunity to develop a dynamic and multi-faceted waterfront in the way Kingston does. All of this was done in a fun and entertaining was, with live music from Spencer Evan's and the Goatsteppers Parade Band who marched us out in a long line on to the pier where people of all ages jumped into the clean, wavy waters of Lake Ontario!
